What did you want to major in before majoring in COM?

I wanted to do something in the Sciences department because I wanted to go into dental school afterward but I quickly learned that Sciences are not for me.

What has been your journey through COM courses at NCSU?

One of my favorite classes I have taken while being at NC State through the COM department is COM 250. I have really enjoyed the professor and learning about the history of media. Another class I have enjoyed is COM 457. In this course, we are learning about how to use technology and the media within the family. I have learned a lot about different techniques and also just learned more about myself and how my family may have used these techniques when discussing things.

What is the most valuable skill you have learned as a COM major?

The most valuable skill that I have learned while being a COM major is that there are several different ways to approach certain situations but in the end, it all comes down to what you think is best for you, the people involved, and the situation.

How do you hope to apply your major after college?

I have an internship lined up for the summer that is working with the Media marketing team within a hospital and I am very excited to see all the opportunities that are offered with that. I think this will be a great way that I can still experience a sense of the medical field while also doing something that I think I am better at.

Communication Background

What did you want to major in before majoring in COM?

I was initially majoring in criminal justice, hoping to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Ultimately, I switched paths because I was no longer interested in entering the justice system. I chose communications because it allows me to explore what I am more passionate about.

What has been your journey through COM courses at NCSU?

My favorite class at NC State was actually a GEP course I needed to complete for my degree. I had chosen Art History, and my professor was so passionate about her subject, making her class extremely engaging. I decided then that I would love to work in communications/marketing for art museums/galleries.

What is the most valuable skill you have learned as a COM major?

The most valuable skill I have learned as a COM Major at NCSU is how to tell a story. Ultimately, in any instance when you are trying to communicate to an audience, you’re telling a story. Storytelling comes in all forms; writing, advertising, speeches, etc…

How do you hope to apply your major after college?

Hopefully, I can use communication skills in either of the two options I am interested in after college. Option one would be to work as an investigative journalist. The other option would be to work in the marketing/communications department for a museum.

What did you want to major in before majoring in COM?

Before majoring in COM, I wanted to go to nursing school so that I could become a Nurse Anesthetist. After completing my CNA, I decided that healthcare was not for me and then decided to pursue a COM degree as it is very diverse and could help me with getting quite a few different jobs.

What has been your journey through COM courses at NCSU?

(Ex.) Favorite class, memorable projects, etc…

This is my first semester at NCSU, I got my Associates Degree at Wake Tech online before I came to NCSU. So far this semester, my favorite class has been COM 484 which is Advanced TV Production/Sports Broadcasting. I have gotten a lot of experience in the sports field which really interests me because I am getting to learn about how much work goes into producing a sporting event that fans do not see.

What is the most valuable skill you have learned as a COM major?

The most valuable skill that I have learned as a COM major is that having a COM degree is extremely diverse and Communications really can be applied to any situation because in order to function as humans we all need communication skills.

How do you hope to apply your major after college?

After college, I hope to use my degree to get a job in sports broadcasting or medical sales. I think that I would still enjoy being a part of the medical world but not on the patient care side of it.

What did you want to major in before majoring in COM?

I went to Stetson University my freshman year for soccer, while I was there I was majoring in pre-law and was wanting to get a law degree. I transferred to UNCW where I decided to change my major to com because law wasn’t offered, and I thought that com would be a good degree and provide many job opportunities after college.

What has been your journey through COM courses at NCSU?

I just transferred to NCSU this semester, so I have only taken a few com classes here so far. I have enjoyed the classes so far and have mostly enjoyed all of the group work because it has made it easier for me to meet people at NCSU.

What is the most valuable skill you have learned as a COM major?

I would say the most valuable skill I have learned as a com major is how to be a good group member or team member. At UNCW and at NCSU group projects have been something I have done a lot in classes, and I think it has been very beneficial for me to learn how to work with all different types of people and how to effectively communicate and get the project done properly.

How do you hope to apply your major after college?

After college I am not completely sure what I want to do yet, I am thinking about something to do with graphic design and marketing, but that could change by the time I graduate.

What did you want to major in before majoring in COM?

Statistics. Hated the programming classes I took, so switched.

What has been your journey through COM courses at NCSU?

(Ex.) Favorite class, memorable projects, etc…

My overall experience has been good. I am not a fan of the test heavy classes where 3 exams make up your entire grade. Feel like there have been a good number of those. My favorite class was Early American History that I took in the spring my Freshman year.

What is the most valuable skill you have learned as a COM major?

The most valuable skill I have learned is how to properly network. Having a lot of tests and projects, I have learned that networking and knowing the right people to either study with, do a group project with, or any of the things that might be important is all possible through good networking. COM major has also taught me how to network through technology and face to face appropriately.

How do you hope to apply your major after college?

I hope my major will be the stepping stone into getting a good job. I also hope that the information I have learned, like networking, will help me prosper in my career.
